Sliced into a 40-day guide, Gabby organizes this book around 7 principles:

  • Be the gentle witness.
  • Be willing to choose love.
  • Shift your perspective.
  • Foster a gratitude attitude.
  • Practice forgiveness.
  • Expect miracles.
  • Reflect and recap.

She then groups these principles into 3 sections: the flashlight, the chisel, and the hammer. This is a helpful metaphor, and a glimpse into her writing style for this book.

Gabby teaches us to use the flashlight as a tool to witness and recognize. Even just the simple act of being still and noticing (without judgement) can shift your perspective and your mindset.

A chisel is a tool used to crack something open, right? So cultivating gratitude and forgiveness help us to be more present.

A hammer is used to drive a point. Gabby says:

Without faith in miracles, your work cannot stick. If you are ready to live a life dedicated to love, then miracles must be an expectation, not a distant afterthought.

Take inventory every day of your practice. This will also help you be more present and tune in to the clues all around you.

I read this book every day as part of my morning routine which includes journaling, meditation, and reflection. I found it helpful, and many of her meditations (prayers) are really great messages to get in spirit. She includes a daily affirmation as a reminder of the practice throughout the day.

If nothing else, this book is a great way to build a habit of meditation. It’s user-friendly style makes it a great entry-level buy in for people who want to dip their toes in the pool of spiritual awakening.
